Horses Building Communities is a community-based organization of wellness and support serving Sonoma County, California and outlying areas. Our therapeutic equine program is designed for military men, women and military families from pre-deployment through homecoming and beyond. It involves specially guided horsemanship activities created and facilitated by licensed mental health professionals, equine specialists, veterans and horses to promote mental, emotional and relational health.

Our Mission is to provide a welcoming and supportive environment where military persons and their families reconnect with themselves and others through a dynamic and powerful relationship with horses.

We’re excited to bring you this new website and this new feature! Because this is a community effort and because we are fortunate to have so many wonderful people involved, we want to tell you about them. Each month we will highlight a special someone. This month we honor Jeannie.

Jeannie is one of Horses Building Communities’ multi-talented volunteers. She served in the Navy during the Vietnam era as an Air Traffic Controller and has a Bachelors in Aeronautics. For 22 years she worked as an Aerospace Engineer tracking various satellites, rockets and the Space Shuttle and as an Air Force contractor managing Base Realignment and Closure projects. Jeannie, being an avid dog lover, has raised three puppies to be service dogs, fostered over 30 rescued dogs and helped find their perfect homes. Through HBC, her newfound interest in horses has enlightened her with an appreciation for the gentle power of horses and how they can help veterans. She currently spends time boarding dogs in her home, care giving, volunteering, gardening and has a natural curiosity, always wanting to learn more..
